Question 2: The 1995 Policy Review and Since

Amid recent global changes, should Canada continue to endorse a balanced ‘three pillar’ approach to its foreign policy objectives, or should the current balance be adjusted?

A balanced three pillar approach is only as good as the foundation they rest on. Canada really doesn't have a balance at present. NAFTA dicates 85% of our trade and hence limits our ability and just as importantly, our willingness to promote ourselves in other trading blocks.

I was proud at Canada's recent stand against attacking Iraq, we took a peaceful stand against independent aggression. But we should be honest with ourselves. Promotion of prosperity and employment (NAFTA) dominates our thinking. We sell ourselves short by this process. We should work hard to shape Canada as a global think tank for world solutions. An environment where world citizens and leaders can come to explore and facilitate the promotion of values and culture aht Canadians cherish.
