How does the military best serve Canada’s foreign policy objectives: though national and continental defence; combat missions in support of international coalitions; peacekeeping; all of the above?

Answer:
Canada's military cannot serve Canada's foreign policy objectives until it knows what those objectives are. If they include enhancing regional or coalition "interests" over global security then I suppose they'll serve that by gearing up to fight in combat missions supporting this or that ad hoc "coalition of the willing". However, if our foreign policy is anything like what I've suggested above, then our military would best serve by:
-gearing up for the proper and appropriate defence of Canada, including patroling our borders, being prepared for internal crises (within the framework of the laws of Canada), and natural disaster assistance;
-equipping and training for peacekeeping
-equipping and training for humanitarian interventions within the framework and under the control of the UN but appropriately mandated and equipped for combat action as a last resort for the protection of threatened civilian populations.
