Question 1: The 1995 Policy Review and Since

Which values and interests bear most fundamentally on Canada's foreign policy? How can Canada's foreign policy better reflect the concerns and priorities of Canadians?

Answer:
The primary focus of our foreign policy should be encouragement of democracy and human rights. This obviously serves the interests of people in developing countries as well as Canada--a more democratic world is a safer world for us too. Canada should target its foreign aid and cultural exchange programs at countries which are receptive to our cultural values of respect for diversity, free speech and democracy. We should also be more proactive in censuring countries which commit human rights abuses. I do not believe the UN is an effective body for progressing our foreign policy. Canada should align more closely with like-minded democracies, such as the US, Britain, Australia, and Israel to advance causes of common interest.
