Question 3: The 1995 Policy Review and Since

Canada is a member of many international organizations, including the G8, NATO, the Commonwealth, La Francophonie, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC), the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Arctic Council. Should our participation in any of these be strengthened, or adjusted?

Answer:
Question 3. *Canada should be particularly supportive of the UN at this time when the UN is under threat from powerful factions in the US. Canada should work hard for UN reform that would make it more effective. *Our membership in NATO should be questioned. Does NATO still have a purpose, or is it just seeking new mandates to prolong its life when it is needed no longer? If NATO will not review its nuclear policy and eschew its first use policy, remove its tactical weapons from non-nuclear weapon state sites and subscribe to the recommendations of the NPT Review conference, then we should leave it, and seek alliances with like-minded nations.
*The G8 should recognize the effect of globalization on emerging nations and promote true free trade for all and support emerging micro-economies. Any financial restructuring demanded should be done with support for those countries for whom this causes tremendous hardship. We should seek global agreements on intellectual property rights and genetic engineering in order to safeguard the biological and chemical weapons conventions. Canada should belong to international organizations in which it may be helpful.
