Since I have participated in a group presentation (answers) by Taiwanese Canadian Cultural Sdciety in Vancouver, I am writing this as an addendum.
In the light of recent Iraqi war, USA is now more than just a "super" power, undisputably "towering" over without any rivals. But military power can solve only military problems, and political issues require political solutions. Anti-American sentiment is rising as expected. This is where Canada comes in, particularly because of her geographic and cultural connection. And they are our best friends and neighbours. We must improve our mutual trade relations, but at the same time, USA does need Canada's energy and support, as political friends, and a buffer zone and joint border security. North American continental security is inevitalbe and this must be sought even though it might erode to some extent our sovereignty. It is a tight rope to walk on, but I believe that is the only recourse we have, and through non-violent means and negotiations that we seek more harmony and peace. Anti-American sentiment must be carefully restrained especially by government officials, whereas legitimate concerns should continue to be expressed. |
