| Canada should indeed cultivate trade and cultural partnerships with emerging economic partners. The negotiation of labour, health and environmental standards are important. Failing that, transparency is absolutely essential, so Canadian consumers can inform themselves and avoid any product made by slave or free prison labour, child labour, or in other degrading, dehumanizing or dangerous conditions. This would favour socially and environmentally responsible businesses, and encourage the development of enforceable labour, health and environmental standards in emerging economies. Canada could help this process by listing the top ten ethically responsible businesses in these countries, so that Canadians have an easy way of supporting good business practices. |
