Canada must change the three pillars to cater to a NEW international environment.
There is only ONE superpower in the world, the United States, who also happens to be Canada's neighbour and our largest trading partner. Canadian foreign policy must attempt to be in a position to provide inputs to development of American policies.
There are global enterprises who generate more money annually than most of Canada's provinces. It seems ridiculous to have diplomatic respresentation to countries who only exist as sovereign nations because of Canadian and other external aid. Canada must seek to develop diplomatic approaches to international corporations who influence the world far more than most of the nations represented at the UN.
Canada must seek to develop alternate conflict resolution mechanisms in the international arena or enhance the mediation capabilities of those already in place. If there are to be alternates to American military intervention then Canada must work in foreign policy towards creating, maintaining or supporting such alternate approaches and methods. |
